NEW TRACKING: Voters in 42 States Have an Election Denier on Their Ballot for Congress or Statewide Office

Latest Research Reveals Election Deniers Could Gain Ground, Secure 28 New Seats Across Statewide Offices and Congress

Washington, D.C. — As voters across the country begin casting their ballots, States United Action today released new data that provides the full picture of the Election Denier landscape ahead of the November general election. Following state primaries, ElectionDeniers.org tracking shows that voters in 42 states will have at least one Election Denier on their ballot for congressional or statewide races. These are critical positions for election administration and certification.

“Democracy is on the ballot this November,” said Joanna Lydgate, CEO of States United Action. “A single Election Denier winning a congressional or statewide office in a single state is a threat to our system as a whole. And this year’s presidential election makes that even more stark: The people we elect to Congress will be responsible for certifying the results of the presidential election on January 6. Voters can’t afford to sit these races out—we deserve leaders who respect the will of the people.”

The Election Denier landscape, as of October 7, 2024:

Potential Seat Gains

  • Election Deniers could gain up to 23 seats in Congress. The Congress we elect this November will be responsible for certifying the results of the 2024 presidential election on Jan. 6, 2025.
  • Election Deniers could gain up to five seats in statewide offices that oversee elections—governor, secretary of state, and attorney general.

Percentage Advancing

  • Election Deniers running for Congress or statewide office have moved on to the November general election in 84% (42/50) of states.
  • Election Deniers have moved on to the November general election in almost 40% (175/469) of congressional races.
  • Election Deniers have moved on to the November general election in almost 50% (13/28) of races for the statewide offices that oversee our elections.

Candidate Tallies

  • 180 Election Deniers running for Congress have moved on to the November general election.
    • At least 173 Election Deniers will be on the ballot for the U.S. House. 132 are incumbents and 41 are challengers.
    • At least 7 Election Deniers will be on the ballot for the U.S. Senate. 4 are incumbents and 3 are challengers.
  • 14 Election Deniers will be on the ballot for statewide office (governor, secretary of state, attorney general) this November. 3 are incumbents and 11 are challengers.

“Our tracking offers voters a crystal-clear picture of the 2024 election landscape: Almost 200 Election Deniers are running for positions of power over our votes. They’ll be on ballots in almost every state in the country,” said Thania Sanchez, Senior Vice President of Research and Analytics at States United Action. “We want to make sure voters know what their candidates have said and done when it comes to our election system. That’s why we will continue to monitor and report on the state of election denial in America.”
