Donald Trump claimed he was the true winner of the 2020 election. His running mate repeatedly refused to answer a basic question about the election outcome. Kari Lake, who’s running for U.S. Senate in Arizona, wouldn’t admit to her own loss in 2022.

All that was just in the last two weeks.

As the general election gets underway, voters across the country are contending with candidates who have damaged trust in free and fair elections. New tracking shows that the threat of election denial goes far beyond the presidential race. States United Action found that voters in 41 states have an Election Denier on the ballot for Congress or statewide office. That covers almost 200 candidates in all.

We know voters really don’t like election denial. And now voters all over the country, not just in the close presidential states, can help defend free and fair elections. Congressional and statewide offices have big responsibilities when it comes to protecting the will of the people:

• The Congress we elect this November will oversee the certification of the 2024 presidential election, among other election-related responsibilities. Our tracking found 173 Election Deniers on the ballot for the House and seven for Senate seats.
• State leaders oversee every step of our elections. They oversee voting, certify the results, and defend the will of the voters in court. We identified 14 Election Deniers on the ballot for those jobs. It’s never been more important to elect leaders from both sides of the aisle who respect the will of the voters. • The State Bar of Texas filed a disciplinary case against former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, according to records made public this week. The filing asks the Texas Board of Disciplinary Appeals to impose discipline based on Powell’s guilty plea in the Fulton County, Georgia, election interference case. States United urged the bar to seek discipline after Powell pleaded guilty.

• North Carolina election officials announced steps to make sure people in counties hit hardest by Hurricane Helene can still vote safely and securely. Officials in Florida are doing the same in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.

• States are ready to run another free, fair, secure election. All counties in Arizona passed tests to verify the accuracy of voting equipment, and Wisconsin election officials announced their state was “fully prepared.”
