North Carolina League of Conservation Voters v. Hall and Harper v. Hall (consolidated) – Redistricting (NC)
STATE SUPREME COURT OF NORTH CAROLINA
In This Resource
On January 24, 2022, the North Carolina Supreme Court accepted a motion by States United and Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd to file an amicus brief in support of the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters and others in their challenge to the Congressional and state legislature district maps passed by the state legislature. The brief explained why extreme partisan gerrymandering harms democracy by allowing politicians to shape districts to pick their voters, instead of allowing voters to pick their politicians. The brief was signed by a bipartisan group of former governors, including former North Carolina Governor Michael F. Easley, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Massachusetts Governor William Weld, and former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman. Previously, on January 6, this group of Governors filed a similar brief with the trial court. On January 11, the lower court issued an opinion finding that the legislature had had an intent to partisan gerrymander and that the resulting maps showed a partisan gerrymander, but that there was no violation of state constitutional provisions.
At the time of the amicus filing, the case was on appeal to the North Carolina Supreme Court.
