States United Action Launches ElectionDeniers.org, Mapping the Full Election Denier Threat Ahead of 2024
New Data Hub Tracks the Election Denier Movement in Every State, Across Multiple Levels of Government
Updated November 17, 2023
Washington, D.C. — States United Action today launched ElectionDeniers.org, a new interactive data hub that provides the full picture of the Election Denier movement across the country. The tool is the first of its kind, tracking state-by-state where Election Deniers have power over elections; candidates who are running for statewide offices with election oversight power; state legislative proposals to change how elections are run; and voter turnout data. In early 2024, the tracking will expand to include Congress and additional analysis on election denial.
The site also offers a broader picture of the election denial threat, including tracking Election Deniers running for president and their campaign fundraising data. States United Action’s 2024 tracker is launching prior to many statewide candidates declaring for office, and will identify Election Deniers as they declare their candidacy.
“The Election Denier movement is a danger to our democracy at every level. It’s well-connected and well-funded. As we head into 2024, voters need to see the full picture of the threat,” said Joanna Lydgate, CEO of States United Action. “We have to fight back against this movement everywhere we find it. Zero tolerance has to be the policy for attacks on our free, fair, secure elections.”
Key Takeaways:
- In 47 states, at least one Election Denier has run for or held a statewide office with election powers since 2021.
- 25 Election Deniers in 19 states currently hold a statewide office with election oversight.
- There are 2 Election Deniers currently running for president in 2024, and one has dropped out. These candidates have already raised $94M combined. Meanwhile, campaign surrogates are spouting election lies and abusing their platforms to amplify misinformation in every corner of the U.S.
- 13 states are holding elections in 2024 for statewide positions that oversee elections. So far, 11 Election Deniers are already on the ballot for those jobs.
- In 2023, at least 185 bills were introduced in 38 state legislatures that would politicize, criminalize, or interfere with elections.
“The data is clear: Almost every single state has had to confront the threat of election denial since it grew into a dangerous new movement during the 2020 election cycle. And the very large majority—47 states—have had an Election Denier run for or hold a statewide office with election oversight power,” said Thania Sanchez, Senior Vice President of Research and Policy Development at States United Action. “Whether there’s an Election Denier on their ballot or sitting in their governor’s mansion, conspiracy theorists trying to stop election officials from doing their jobs, or a state or local official who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6—every voter deserves the complete picture of the threat to their elections as we head into 2024.”
States United Action started tracking the Election Denier movement in 2022 through our Replacing the Refs tool, shining a spotlight on the Election Deniers running for the statewide offices that run, oversee, and protect our elections: governor, attorney general, and secretary of state. This work continued in 2023 and has expanded into ElectionDeniers.org.
