States United Statement: 2026 Midterm Elections

A statement from Joanna Lydgate, President and CEO of the States United Democracy Center, on the 2026 midterm elections:

“Last night showed the strength of America’s election system. For months, state and local officials prepared for every imaginable scenario. They defended their authority, coordinated across agencies, and pushed back when the federal government tried to overreach. When the moment came, they were ready. Voters made their voices heard, and the system held.

The job isn’t finished yet. Close races still need to be tallied and certified, and state officials will keep doing what they’ve done all year: follow the law, protect voters, and make sure every eligible vote is counted.

To the election officials and poll workers across this country: thank you. Because of you, democracy didn’t just survive last night. It shined.”
