New “Lost Funds” Tool Documents $177 Billion in Federal Funding Disrupted by Trump Administration Across All 50 States
First-of-its-kind Interactive Tracker from States United and Grant Witness Illustrates Nationwide Impact of Federal Funding Disruptions; Breaks Data Down by State and Sector
WASHINGTON — The States United Democracy Center and Grant Witness today launched Lost Funds, an interactive tracker that provides a holistic look at the federal grants that have been canceled, frozen, delayed, or otherwise interrupted since Trump took office in January 2025. The tool documents $177 billion in federal funding disruptions across all 50 states and Washington D.C., spanning 17 policy sectors, and examines impacts in communities across the country.
“Since President Trump took office, states have been dealing with the consequences of federal funding disruptions that reach directly into people’s lives,” said Kelly Rader, Research Director at the States United Democracy Center. “Congress approved this funding, and the Trump administration does not have unilateral authority to simply override those decisions and withhold money from the communities it was meant to serve. Lost Funds shows the extraordinary scale and real human impact of these disruptions, and how states are once again on the front lines protecting their residents.”
Lost Funds provides a comprehensive overview of funding disruptions from the past 20 months, covering the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze funding during his first week in office and each subsequent disruption across health care, education, transportation, disaster relief, science and technology, and more. It includes an overview of state efforts to challenge the disruptions and the funding they’ve restored for their communities.
